Technical Information

empower® Chart Creation is a purely local (COM) add-in for Windows that is distributed to users in the traditional way via a software distribution as an .msi (or .exe) package. We are currently working on a native add-in for the Mac.

As this is a local add-in, there is no connection to the cloud. Only the license activation requires an external connection. We are also ISO 27001 certified.

Every empower® user needs a license. A new license is activated by us if it is a previously unknown Windows domain user. To activate the license, there must be an active Internet connection. Our activation server can be reached at the address activate.empowersuite.com via port 443. This connection must first be allowed via a proxy (and possibly a firewall).

empower® can be seamlessly connected to conventional DAM systems allowing users to access assets such as images, icons and videos directly from the empower® library. This eliminates the need to switch or log in to a separate application and search for the respective asset in the DAM system.

SharePoint is often used for slide management in companies. However, with SharePoint 2013, Microsoft abolished the slide library component because of poor customer adoption. The pricing for empower® Chart Creation is based on the number of licenses. One license is required per person. Each user can use the software on multiple devices. There are no additional fees for administrative users.

Welcome to the empower®experience: seamless implementation and onboarding

Our dedicated onboarding team is here to guide you through the entire process. Below, we’ve outlined the key steps and milestones to ensure a successful user adoption:

  • If you would like a design set-up, coordinate the set-up requirements with us - we will be happy to advise you.
  • You send us the required documents (slide templates, images, icons, charts styles). We will review these documents for completeness and inform you of the set-up period. As a rule, the timeframe ranges from 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the desired scope of set-up
  • After completion of the installation and a correction loop, you will receive the prepared installation file and accompanying technical material from us
  • Brief coordination on technical preparation with your IT department
  • Planning and inviting users to online training sessions
  • Your IT department distributes the software via your company's software distribution platform. We provide technical support if required.
  • Users who receive the software should attend the online training or review the recorded sessions and accompanying materials provided.
  • Measurement of software usage via telemetry data
  • Planning separate training sessions on individual topics to ensure maximum user acceptance
  • We will support you until your expectations of the software are met.
Slide Updates    Implementation duration

The rollout of the software takes 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the size of your company. With an (optional) design configuration, it takes 1-3 months.

Rights Management    Required resources

Step 1 (optional):

  • A person from the marketing or communications department is required to set up the design. Ideally, the person will send us examples and corporate design specifications and be available to answer any questions. The time required for this is approx. 1-2 hours.
  • Once set up, the person takes over the visual approval of the slide templates, chart styles and design elements and officially releases them for use. This also takes about 1-2 hours.

Step 2:

  • The project management invites all users to the online training sessions and communicates important information about the use of the new software in advance. This takes about 1 hour.
  • The IT department rolls out the software. The time required for implementation is generally minimal, but can vary due to test routines, outsourcing the software installation to service providers or technical tests. The time required is largely determined by your company's internal processes.
  • Taking part in online training or watching the recording and achieving initial work results with the new software takes around 2 hours per person.

Step 3:

  • Measuring software usage does not require any time on your part because telemetry data is collected and sent to you by us.
  • The planning of separate training sessions takes approx. 1 hour, the training sessions themselves last approx. 30 minutes.
Asset Library    Required IT involvement​

Your IT department is required to distribute the software to the users' PCs, to provide first-level support and to update the software each year (the latter only if your company decides against automatic software updates). We offer 3-4 software updates per calendar year, of which experience shows that customers perform 1-2 per year. The total IT and support costs amount to approx. 0.25 FTE per year.

How long does it take for users to get used to the software?

Good news - it is short, with only a few hours of productive work (i.e. producing results at the same time), for two reasons: on the one hand, people who create charts on an ongoing or frequent basis are usually experienced in this activity. They are not doing it for the first time. On the other hand, the empower software has been developed in such a way that it integrates seamlessly into the PowerPoint visuals and is intuitive to use thanks to its friendly GUI - especially for people who already have some experience in creating charts. We support you during the introduction with training, accompanying materials and numerous short videos that explain the software in the best possible way so that the introduction is a success.

How can we ensure that the software is actually used?

During the introductory phase and afterwards, we measure the use of the software functions (event-based and anonymous). The data is collected on the empower telemetry server and provides an accurate picture of the frequency of use and the individual functions used. Together, we identify peaks and troughs in usage and use training to effectively adjust those functions where greater usage would be desirable. 

Can Microsoft updates cause problems with the empower® software?

empower is Microsoft-certified and a compatibility partner, i.e. all updates released by Microsoft for M365 are always compatible with empower®.

Is it possible to edit empower® charts without using the software?

Changes to diagrams without the appropriate software are neither possible nor useful. Why? On the one hand, without the software, users do not have access to all the functions they would need to create or customize professional charts. These include special chart types such as Gantt charts or multi-level waterfall charts, arrows, breaks, special axis settings and individual data labels. On the other hand, changes to charts without the original software lead to technical changes to the charts. This in turn means that the charts can often no longer be read in (correctly) by the software, which means that further editing of such diagrams with the software no longer works. Users who use the software would have to create them again - an unnecessary duplication of work. Our solution is to offer the software at a moderate price so that small and medium-sized companies can make it available to all users. For larger license volumes, we also offer attractively priced corporate licenses. This effectively prevents anyone from having to edit charts created with the software without it.

Is it possible to link charts to data within Excel files that are stored on Microsoft SharePoint or Teams?

Yes, such Excel links are possible and are used by many customers.

Do the Excel links created with the software remain even if the files are moved to another location?

Yes, the “Use relative path” option can be activated when creating Excel links. This means that the Excel link remains in place even if the pair of linked Excel and PowerPoint files (sent and then moved by the recipient) is moved to a different location.

Is empower® compatible with think-cell?

If by “compatible” you mean a problem-free parallel operation of both add-ins in PowerPoint - yes, that is possible. However, there is one situation where the think-cell software needs to be deactivated by users, namely when converting think-cell charts to empower® charts. This feature helps users to switch from think-cell to empower® so that they do not have to re-create existing think-cell charts when switching to empower®.
Background information: empower® is an alternative to think-cell. Switching to empower® can save significant license costs per year. For example, a single think-cell license costs $26.90 - a single empower® license only $11.99 €. Companies that successfully reduced their license costs by switching to empower include Bayer, DHL, Miele and Covestro.

How can we ensure the security of charts created with the software and the data represented in those charts?
The software is client-based, meaning it operates solely on the user’s PC. Third parties do not have access to any data that is imported or visualized in the charts
We process sensitive data with the software. How can we be sure that the software meets our security requirements?
